i noticed that the file was .shnf.tar what is the '.tar' extention? i couldn't find it in the FAQ, so pardon the ignorance...

.tar is an extension meaning a "tar file". This is an ancient unix mechanism for bundling files together into one file (like zip but without the compression). We believe that it is handled on most OS's (winzip, stuffit, and tar), but would be interested if it is not.
